For those of us taping up the occasional package, a plastic packaging tape dispenser is fine. But for people in a factory or industrial environment, who are taping boxes all day long, a more robust solution is required. Hence Japanese tool manufacturer Trusco, which targets the manufacturing and construction industries, designed this TEX-266A.
First off the thing is made of steel, rather than plastic; it's meant to survive drops on concrete floors.
To keep the weight down and ease installation by minimizing friction, the mounting core for the tape is narrower than the width of the unit.
The designers focused on the pain points of a power user. The black knurled roller you see at the bottom is an anti-reverse mechanism. It prevents the single greatest annoyance of an end user, which is when the tape rolls backwards and the edge disappears back onto the roll.
The center of the handle has a détente for your thumb.
The yellow thingy is a blade guard. Japan being a safety-minded place, you're meant to slide the cover over the teeth—which are razor-sharp--when not in use. The larger central tab is for the user to gain purchase when flipping the cover open. The two smaller tabs on either side will automatically flip the cover open when downward pressure is applied. In other words, if you forget to open the cover and start taping something, the cover will automatically flip out of the way when you tilt the object to make the cut.
The blade guard isn't steel, but polypropylene, and may not survive a drop on a concrete floor. Thus it's been designed to be user-replaceable, with easily-accessible screws.
You'll note there are little "ears" on the sides of the handle. That's to prevent the tape from shifting side-to-side.
Lastly, if you're some kind of cowboy, it can also be purchased without the blade guard.
That's a lot of design, for something that retails for $15.
